چکیده

INTRODUCTION Large dead wood or coarse woody debris (CWD) with a diameter >10 cm is an important resource for many arthropods and other animals that use it for food, oviposition sites, protection from environmental extremes, and foraging habitat (Elton 1966, Grove 2002b, Harmon and others 1986). Over 400 species of insects are known to use woody debris as a food resource in the Southeastern United States (Hanula 1996), and similar or greater numbers of arthropods have been reported to use it at other locations throughout the world (Grove 2002b). In addition to their direct contribution to forest diversity, these saproxylic arthropods are an important part of the forest food web (Harmon and others 1986). However, little work has been done on the role of terrestrial CWD in the forests of the Southeastern United States (McMinn and Crossley 1996).

Hanula et al: Arthropods and Coarse Woody Debris 229 GROUND-DWELLING ARTHROPOD ASSOCIATION WITH COARSE WOODY DEBRIS FOLLOWING LONG-TERM DORMANT SEASON PRESCRIBED BURNING IN THE LONGLEAF PINE FLATWOODS OF NORTH FLORIDA

A 5-year study of long-term (40 years) study plots was conducted on the Osceola National Forest in northern Florida to determine how dormant-season fire frequency (annual, biennial, quadrennial, or unburned) affects ground-dwelling macroarthropod use of coarse woody debris in longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) forests. Pitfall traps were used to sample arthropods near logs or metal drift fen...

Food Availability, Foraging Behavior, and Diet of Autumn Migrant Landbirds in the Boise Foothills of Southwestern Idaho

Food availability and acquisition are critical components of a stopover site’s suitability, but we know relatively little about how changes in food availability affect the stopover ecology of migrating landbirds. we examined fruit and arthropod availability in three habitats, studied foraging behavior and diet, and investigated use versus availability for passerines migrating through southweste...

Foraging mode of the Moorish gecko Tarentola mauritanica in an arid environment: Inferences from abiotic setting, prey availability and dietary composition

Predators, particularly those living in deserts, use two main foraging strategies, namely sit-andwait or wide foraging. The Moorish gecko Tarentola mauritanica, a gecko frequently inhabiting humanized habitats, has been repeatedly classified as a sit-and-wait predator. However, previous data on dietary composition in natural habitats suggest a wide foraging strategy for this species. This study...

Coupling of canopy and understory food webs by ground-dwelling predators.

Understanding food-web dynamics requires knowing whether species assemblages are compartmentalized into distinct energy channels, and, if so, how these channels are structured in space. We used isotopic analyses to reconstruct the food web of a Kenyan wooded grassland. Insect prey were relatively specialized consumers of either C3 (trees and shrubs) or C4 (grasses) plants. Arboreal predators (a...

ECOLOGY, BEHAVIOR AND BIONOMICS Effi cient Sampling of Ground-Dwelling Arthropods Using Pitfall Traps in Arid Steppes

Pitfall trapping is probably the most frequently used method for sampling grounddwelling arthropods. While the capture of specimens in pitfall traps largely depends on the number of individuals in the sampled area, trap design and trapping effort for a given environment, can also affect sampling success. The aim of this study was to determine the best pitfall trapping design for collecting grou...
